Just finished reading Burn the Dark and started I Come With Knives by S.A. Hunt.
I’m not going to lie, I bought these two books entirely based on the titles. “I Come With Knives” is just a fantastically evocative title. They’re straight horror books, which isn’t always a genre I gravitate to, but I really enjoyed the first one. The series star is a woman named Robin whose mother was killed by witches, and she’s out for revenge. She currently lives and makes her money by traveling around the country, killing witches and posting videos on YouTube. (Most viewers assume it’s a Blair Witch-style fake with well-done special effects, instead of being actually real). After a few years of this she’s decided to take on the coven that killed her mom, so she returns to her home town.
There’s obviousy shades of a million horror stories here, especially Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (One character asks if she got a training montage, and she replies, “I guess? Mostly we just beat the hell out of each other.”). The book itself makes a pretty judicious use of flashbacks to flesh out the main story, and book two essentially starts 5 minutes after book 1 ends.
Overall I really enjoyed this one, and am digging the next installment.
